It's Be Life Changers, because we believe everyday people can be the life changers in their family, business, and community.
00:00.131 --> 00:04.792
[SPEAKER_02]: specific lumen in your building will actually make people spend more money and stay longer.
00:04.992 --> 00:06.193
[SPEAKER_02]: That's what we're aiming for.
00:06.373 --> 00:10.694
[SPEAKER_02]: Background is in sales, business development, organizational leadership was part of my education.
00:10.834 --> 00:16.295
[SPEAKER_02]: Building culture and building teams is something I pride myself on and something clicked on my mind like what do we want to name this?
00:16.315 --> 00:17.175
[SPEAKER_02]: What would we name this?
00:17.215 --> 00:18.536
[SPEAKER_02]: How would we make this hours?
00:18.736 --> 00:20.836
[SPEAKER_02]: I always get emotional every time I talk about this.
00:20.876 --> 00:22.116
[SPEAKER_02]: The name popped in my head May.
00:22.757 --> 00:23.157
[SPEAKER_02]: The May's.
00:23.357 --> 00:23.837
[SPEAKER_02]: May's tower.
00:29.717 --> 00:32.780
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, hello and welcome back to Be Life Changers.
00:33.120 --> 00:35.082
[SPEAKER_00]: I am Kathy Coach, your host.
00:35.183 --> 00:39.607
[SPEAKER_00]: Today, we're studying down with Denny Perdue, owner of May's Tavern in Westport.
00:39.747 --> 00:47.795
[SPEAKER_00]: If you ever walked into May's Tavern, you know it's much more than a place to grab a meal or a drink, is where people come together to connect.
00:48.676 --> 00:50.739
[SPEAKER_00]: celebrate and build community for sure.
00:51.500 --> 01:05.999
[SPEAKER_00]: We recently helped with an incredible Juneteenth social at Mace Tavern, featuring a few local vendors, live music, jazz, whiskey tasting, amazing food, and an atmosphere that was truly brought people together.
01:06.700 --> 01:18.787
[SPEAKER_00]: Today we're talking about their story behind May's tavern and Denny's heart for community and why gathering around a table still matters because building community I believe is one table at a time.
01:19.761 --> 01:22.022
[SPEAKER_00]: So Danny, welcome, welcome to the show.
01:22.102 --> 01:24.083
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm so excited to have you today.
01:24.603 --> 01:29.184
[SPEAKER_00]: We're here at JT Visuals and as you see, it's blanked out in my colors.
01:29.504 --> 01:32.606
[SPEAKER_00]: So now you get to really know the true me, I suppose.
01:32.666 --> 01:34.146
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, give you know me just a little bit more.
01:34.766 --> 01:39.528
[SPEAKER_00]: I've had the pleasure of meeting you and I just love your heart for the community.
01:39.888 --> 01:44.550
[SPEAKER_00]: And that's why I had you on the show because I think everyone needs to know your story.
01:44.650 --> 01:46.070
[SPEAKER_00]: So thank you for coming today.
01:46.090 --> 01:46.871
[SPEAKER_02]: I appreciate that.
01:46.891 --> 01:47.851
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I'm excited to share.
01:48.051 --> 01:49.473
[SPEAKER_00]: yes, awesome, awesome.
01:49.513 --> 01:58.483
[SPEAKER_00]: So let's dive right in today and tell me just a little bit more about yourself because I mean, I've got to know you a little bit, but I want my audience to know you as well.
01:58.623 --> 01:59.324
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, absolutely.
01:59.364 --> 02:02.047
[SPEAKER_02]: So there's a number of layers with all of this.
02:02.087 --> 02:06.692
[SPEAKER_02]: So I have been a natural entertainer for a long time.
02:06.993 --> 02:07.093
[SPEAKER_02]: And
02:07.673 --> 02:13.098
[SPEAKER_02]: I've done a lot of different things from DJing, to production, to playing drums.
02:13.258 --> 02:17.862
[SPEAKER_02]: We have a group that comes in the fourth Wednesday of every month and it's a jam session.
02:17.882 --> 02:22.165
[SPEAKER_02]: And I jumped on the drums like two months ago and everybody was like, what, you played drums?
02:22.185 --> 02:23.046
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm like, yeah, I played drums.
02:23.066 --> 02:25.168
[SPEAKER_02]: So it's not something I advertise.
02:25.228 --> 02:27.029
[SPEAKER_02]: But so yeah, there's a lot of layers.
02:27.710 --> 02:29.391
[SPEAKER_02]: I consider myself kind of a sweet onion.
02:29.411 --> 02:31.313
[SPEAKER_02]: I guess you could say because you have to pull everything back.
02:32.134 --> 02:45.347
[SPEAKER_02]: And so I've been a business owner, I've been, like I said, in production, we still own our own business for private weddings and events and private events, and we still do a lot of fundraisers and stuff like that too.
02:45.387 --> 02:47.510
[SPEAKER_02]: So everything we do from May's tavern to
02:48.230 --> 02:56.092
[SPEAKER_02]: My, you know, the, the secondary business is all about community and there's a lot there to unpack depends on how deep you want to go today.
02:56.112 --> 02:56.693
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, all right.
02:56.733 --> 02:57.093
[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
02:57.113 --> 02:58.173
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I love that.
02:58.213 --> 03:00.634
[SPEAKER_00]: That's the, I knew that's we had a connection right away.
03:00.674 --> 03:02.934
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, you know, because we love helping people.
03:02.994 --> 03:11.297
[SPEAKER_00]: We love serving our community and making a place for them to come together because I think that's super important now is our place where people can come together.
03:11.317 --> 03:11.657
[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
03:12.177 --> 03:16.503
[SPEAKER_00]: And so tell me, what was your journey before opening May's tavern?
03:16.664 --> 03:21.030
[SPEAKER_00]: So you said a little bit about the industry of like events and stuff.
03:21.050 --> 03:22.231
[SPEAKER_00]: Tell me just a little bit more about them.
03:22.432 --> 03:25.296
[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, so my wife and I own her own company called Purdue Collective.
03:25.536 --> 03:25.776
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
03:27.078 --> 03:28.279
[SPEAKER_02]: a little over 10 years now.
03:29.160 --> 03:33.763
[SPEAKER_02]: She has been a planner in the industry from weddings to corporates.
03:34.844 --> 03:43.570
[SPEAKER_02]: And then I guess that I've ran an entertainment company, managed a big entertainment company out of Springfield and came into Kansas City and so I helped develop that.
03:44.751 --> 03:49.895
[SPEAKER_02]: Left that company in 2024 and we really started kind of pushing into my own arena, my own things.
03:51.276 --> 04:05.507
[SPEAKER_02]: And so, you know, the life before maze and still continues to be life during maze is a lot of different things from MPR doing fundraisers for them.
04:05.527 --> 04:05.927
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
04:05.947 --> 04:07.048
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm sorry, people rescue.
04:08.429 --> 04:11.812
[SPEAKER_02]: I am on a board for Alzheimer's, do what you love.
04:12.352 --> 04:12.873
[SPEAKER_02]: foundation.
04:13.013 --> 04:16.795
[SPEAKER_02]: So I like to volunteer and do a lot of different things for them.
04:18.156 --> 04:23.539
[SPEAKER_02]: Hope faith is another big group that I support once a year as an MC.
04:25.000 --> 04:29.822
[SPEAKER_02]: And then there is another group from the wedding industry called Cheers and Charity.
04:30.083 --> 04:30.403
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
04:30.443 --> 04:37.107
[SPEAKER_02]: So I MC that I help produce that and bring a lot of the the audio of the visual parts of that into into play.
04:37.147 --> 04:37.307
[SPEAKER_02]: So.
04:38.408 --> 04:51.818
[SPEAKER_02]: That's one portion of the Purdue Collective where I'm helping create that, but then I'm also, I do a number of weddings throughout the year, usually about 10 or so, and then, you know, a number of just little private events and stuff like that.
04:51.858 --> 05:02.446
[SPEAKER_02]: So, and that could be anything from, you know, doing a tailgate at the chief's stadium or, you know, a birthday party, or, you know, something simple like that.
05:02.486 --> 05:02.666
[SPEAKER_02]: So,
05:03.346 --> 05:10.430
[SPEAKER_02]: Um, you know, if someone calls me and they need something, then, you know, usually I can put something together and make it happen or I have resources to do that as well.
05:10.450 --> 05:12.891
[SPEAKER_02]: So there's a lot of really great companies in town that I work with.
05:12.911 --> 05:13.372
[SPEAKER_00]: Awesome.
05:13.852 --> 05:21.116
[SPEAKER_02]: And so that's the life before May's, you know, my background is in sales and business development.
05:21.196 --> 05:23.217
[SPEAKER_02]: Organizational leadership was part of my education.
05:23.517 --> 05:23.838
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
05:24.138 --> 05:27.900
[SPEAKER_02]: And so, you know, building culture and building teams is something
05:31.722 --> 05:34.244
[SPEAKER_00]: Well that is so awesome because I mean that makes so much sense.
05:34.404 --> 05:39.767
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean um because when you're a true entrepreneur a heart I feel like there's always more than one hat.
05:40.027 --> 05:40.207
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
05:40.307 --> 05:43.629
[SPEAKER_00]: Like it was like oh I got this and now I'm going to do this and oh yeah.
05:43.769 --> 05:47.191
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh now we have maize taverns so it's like yeah.
05:47.372 --> 05:50.754
[SPEAKER_00]: So let's talk about that the story behind maize taverns.
05:50.774 --> 05:50.994
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
05:51.014 --> 05:55.837
[SPEAKER_00]: So um how did that all come about and um the name maize tavern come from?
05:56.537 --> 06:13.492
[SPEAKER_02]: So, I want to see it was kind of a Sunday fun day type of weird thing that happened back in August of last year, the owners that owned May is at the time had purchased it from a friend of ours and it was called the Press Penny at the time.
06:13.672 --> 06:14.073
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
06:14.513 --> 06:18.416
[SPEAKER_02]: We fell in love with that tavern because we just live up the street.
06:18.557 --> 06:22.320
[SPEAKER_02]: When we moved back to Kansas City in 2023, love the building, love the
06:22.700 --> 06:27.223
[SPEAKER_02]: the place, the staff, the people, just everything it was about and then they sold, that was kind of sad.
06:27.964 --> 06:43.514
[SPEAKER_02]: And so anyways, we were there one afternoon with a friend of ours, we're all outside of the patio, just joking, having a good time and we got to talking about like what if we ever bought a bar and my friend asked me that she's like, what if we would you ever think about buying a bar and my wife and I liked each other?
06:43.535 --> 06:44.215
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I didn't know.
06:44.375 --> 06:44.735
[SPEAKER_02]: Which one?
06:44.755 --> 06:45.616
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm like, well, this one.
06:45.656 --> 06:46.376
[SPEAKER_02]: We really like this one.
06:46.776 --> 06:51.858
[SPEAKER_02]: About that time, the GM at that point, walk past this and he was like, oh, you're all interested in buying a bar.
06:52.358 --> 06:58.601
[SPEAKER_02]: And I'm like, wow, I mean, I don't know, maybe if the price was right, it sounds like a great idea.
06:58.961 --> 07:03.723
[SPEAKER_02]: And so it kind of blossomed from there for a little bit.
07:03.783 --> 07:07.825
[SPEAKER_02]: We took about a month and had some conversations with ownership.
07:07.885 --> 07:09.526
[SPEAKER_02]: Talk through a few of the numbers.
07:09.906 --> 07:10.946
[SPEAKER_02]: And then we kind
07:13.992 --> 07:18.934
[SPEAKER_02]: And then late September, early October, we had another conversation with the owners again.
07:19.334 --> 07:28.518
[SPEAKER_02]: We got a little bit more serious on some of the details and some financing, some capital, just all the business type conversations.
07:28.538 --> 07:30.879
[SPEAKER_02]: You know, all the things that went into it.
07:30.959 --> 07:37.722
[SPEAKER_02]: Learned a lot to that process about liquor license and helped department and the codes and all that because I had never owned a restaurant before.
07:39.023 --> 07:47.589
[SPEAKER_02]: I've owned businesses, you know, a self-starter business you can pull out of your garage is one thing and an actual brick and mortar restaurants completely different.
07:47.769 --> 07:48.690
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, yes.
07:49.731 --> 07:58.258
[SPEAKER_02]: So yeah, we were, we got more in conversation and early November, I think is really started coming together.
07:58.478 --> 07:58.958
[SPEAKER_02]: Right.
07:59.118 --> 08:00.980
[SPEAKER_02]: Numbers were starting to align.
08:01.320 --> 08:02.061
[SPEAKER_02]: We made an offer.
08:03.141 --> 08:09.464
[SPEAKER_02]: They accepted that offer, and so my wife and I were, we were setting at the bar one night.
08:09.804 --> 08:15.687
[SPEAKER_02]: It was a Thursday night, and we were just having conversations about, is this really, is this real?
08:15.887 --> 08:17.028
[SPEAKER_02]: Are we really going to do this?
08:17.308 --> 08:20.009
[SPEAKER_02]: And just really kind of, you know, rummaging it through our head.
08:20.469 --> 08:26.692
[SPEAKER_02]: And we were talking about names, we were talking about, you know, finances.
08:26.712 --> 08:30.013
[SPEAKER_02]: We were talking about, you know, just attracting business, all those sorts of things.
08:30.053 --> 08:31.154
[SPEAKER_02]: So everything was on the table.
08:32.395 --> 08:35.016
[SPEAKER_02]: And something clicked on my mind, like, what do we want to name this?
08:35.076 --> 08:35.936
[SPEAKER_02]: What would we name this?
08:35.956 --> 08:37.276
[SPEAKER_02]: How would we make this ours?
08:37.756 --> 08:39.556
[SPEAKER_02]: And I always get emotional every time I talk about this.
08:40.217 --> 08:45.638
[SPEAKER_02]: The name popped in my head May, the Mays, Mays Tavern.
08:45.738 --> 08:50.999
[SPEAKER_02]: And then my head went to grown-ups too, where they were saying Mays, which is weird, but it's joke.
08:51.039 --> 08:54.779
[SPEAKER_02]: So anyways, we were sitting there talking about it.
08:54.899 --> 08:56.880
[SPEAKER_02]: I said May and we both just started bawling.
08:58.245 --> 09:01.007
[SPEAKER_02]: There was like 40 people in the bar and they're all looking at a super weird.
09:01.047 --> 09:03.269
[SPEAKER_02]: We're all crying at this little cocktail table.
09:03.349 --> 09:09.693
[SPEAKER_02]: And anyways, we just started kind of rummaging through that idea and really started mowing that over and where does that come from?
09:09.733 --> 09:10.394
[SPEAKER_02]: What does that mean?
09:10.434 --> 09:12.595
[SPEAKER_02]: And so we both knew this.
09:12.795 --> 09:14.136
[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I mean, we've been married this year.
09:14.156 --> 09:15.157
[SPEAKER_02]: It'll be 26 years.
09:15.297 --> 09:16.258
[SPEAKER_02]: We both knew this.
09:16.278 --> 09:17.018
[SPEAKER_02]: We thank you.
09:17.038 --> 09:18.800
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, we recognized it.
09:18.840 --> 09:22.982
[SPEAKER_02]: We knew it, but we never really kind of put two and two together and did the math.
09:23.483 --> 09:26.145
[SPEAKER_02]: So my wife's grandmother's name was Lily May.
09:26.885 --> 09:39.201
[SPEAKER_02]: And then my mom's side her name was May Belle and then my dad's mom was Odee May and so it was like this math moment where we're like Okay, this makes sense, you know, so
09:40.590 --> 10:06.234
[SPEAKER_02]: Um, it really just made sense and then the content and the the information behind all of our grandparents um, all made sense as well because, um, you know, and we have the story on our menu now, but Lily Mae was a waitress and in hospitality and, uh, she loves serving people, she served people in her local church, she served people obviously in her job, um, she was often found serving people in her neighborhood, uh, they lived in a very,
10:07.305 --> 10:10.446
[SPEAKER_02]: Low income neighborhood and so there's often times she would make food.
10:10.506 --> 10:32.993
[SPEAKER_02]: She would take it to different people and help You know my grandmother Maybel worked at Truman Medical Center down in independence the old building It's just darkers offices now But she she worked there in the cafeteria and made pies and baked goods and stuff like that for the the patients in the hospital and then my grandmother Odie may she worked
10:33.293 --> 10:40.237
[SPEAKER_02]: kind of in the same capacity but it was more on the hospitality side and more directing a lot of those things and so she worked at North Kansas City Hospital.
10:40.417 --> 11:00.348
[SPEAKER_02]: Everything about our grandmothers was all about and has been about hospitality and serving people and seeing people where they're at and trying to give back to them and that's been something that's embedded in our lives for years and that's the story behind maze, that's what maze should be and I know it's kind of weird
11:01.128 --> 11:03.850
[SPEAKER_02]: It's a bar, but it's so much more than that.
11:04.410 --> 11:05.311
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, it's more than that.
11:05.491 --> 11:07.552
[SPEAKER_00]: Most definitely you can feel it when you walk through the doors.
11:08.112 --> 11:10.594
[SPEAKER_00]: The very first time that I came through, I could feel that.
11:10.774 --> 11:12.775
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, you know, I could feel that community.
11:12.995 --> 11:13.216
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
11:13.256 --> 11:16.217
[SPEAKER_00]: Because even the events you host is all about community.
11:16.237 --> 11:17.078
[SPEAKER_00]: It's about giving.
11:17.638 --> 11:25.502
[SPEAKER_00]: And everything I've been to now, since the first time I walk through the doors, is the same thing from those that, from the menu.
11:25.962 --> 11:31.525
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, it feels like home cook food, like, you know, and it's like that thing that your grandma would bring to you.
11:31.545 --> 11:36.268
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, and I'm saying the best of the best, you know, which is not all bar foods.
11:36.808 --> 11:44.392
[SPEAKER_00]: We'll just say that and I am a foodie, so that means something, but there's not been a thing I've tasted that I have not loved.
11:44.852 --> 11:51.115
[SPEAKER_00]: The drinks are well put together and from the everybody so friendly when you walk in, you just feel like you're home.
11:51.835 --> 12:01.160
[SPEAKER_00]: And that's, so you've done it very well, not as a perfect name and how cool is that that represents such, what a legacy.
12:01.640 --> 12:02.581
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, to pass on.
12:02.741 --> 12:03.361
[SPEAKER_00]: Yep.
12:03.441 --> 12:04.602
[SPEAKER_00]: And that means something.
12:04.722 --> 12:04.902
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
12:05.342 --> 12:34.175
[SPEAKER_02]: It's really powerful for us, and it's really powerful for us to bring that forward every time someone comes to the door opening the door, we're privileged that guests come in and we want them to come in and feel like this is that home away from home, I have friends that have really nice homes and bigger, more suburbish, if that's a word, areas of the city, and they have their own little bars downstairs so they can go to the kitchen and
12:35.457 --> 12:38.320
[SPEAKER_02]: You know, not everybody has that, especially in our neighborhood area.
12:38.380 --> 12:46.026
[SPEAKER_02]: You know, it, it's a lot of bungalows and cottages and smaller homes on the that Volker West Plaza area.
12:46.047 --> 12:46.307
[SPEAKER_02]: Mm-hmm.
12:46.887 --> 12:54.174
[SPEAKER_02]: And so you don't have that space where you can just walk down stairs and grab a drink and hang out unless you have a lot of money and maybe that's you, whatever that's cool.
12:54.934 --> 13:08.907
[SPEAKER_02]: But, you know, I think people are looking for not a dive bar, but a place that feels warm, kind of like a dive bar does, if you will, people like going to dive bars, because it's low expectation.
13:09.227 --> 13:10.628
[SPEAKER_02]: Right.
13:11.149 --> 13:15.893
[SPEAKER_02]: It's usually good drinks and expensive, or, you know, reasonable at least.
13:15.993 --> 13:16.193
[SPEAKER_02]: Right.
13:16.553 --> 13:20.257
[SPEAKER_02]: And so those were all attributes that we wanted to bring to the table that the press Penny was.
13:21.217 --> 13:27.081
[SPEAKER_02]: Um, and then blend in this really great home type of feel and the vibe that family type of feel.
13:27.221 --> 13:29.523
[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, like that elevated dive bar.
13:29.643 --> 13:37.068
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I would say, I would say definitely an elevated dive bar because I mean, it is.
13:37.088 --> 13:41.171
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it sounds like you feel at home, but yeah, everybody's welcome.
13:41.371 --> 13:41.531
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
13:41.771 --> 13:42.592
[SPEAKER_00]: And that's what I love.
13:42.652 --> 13:45.974
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, because when you walk in, you see all kinds of people and I love that.
13:46.054 --> 13:50.297
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah, we get a lot of different types of people that they're, it's pretty fun.
13:50.637 --> 13:52.919
[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, sorry to interrupt, but Joe, you got something on your chest.
13:54.600 --> 13:58.243
[SPEAKER_01]: When I filled my first eight business, I chalked it up to a couple of things.
13:58.944 --> 14:06.030
[SPEAKER_01]: Number one, I was very proud and I didn't learn how to build a business, but the second thing I realized is I didn't go to school for this.
14:06.490 --> 14:12.575
[SPEAKER_01]: And it's fun to try to figure things out and explore, but then there comes a point where you're like, wait, hold on.
14:13.015 --> 14:15.836
[SPEAKER_01]: What are all the other successful business owners doing?
14:16.076 --> 14:20.297
[SPEAKER_01]: We've provided something for you if you feel the same exact way.
14:20.577 --> 14:33.361
[SPEAKER_01]: We've provided school SKWOL entrepreneur experience where you can actually have a free content and a community of people that are also in there that are entrepreneurs that love to give feedback and ask for feedback.
14:33.481 --> 14:38.182
[SPEAKER_01]: If you don't feel like you have the resources enough to help you become successful, join our school.
14:38.582 --> 14:39.742
[SPEAKER_01]: It starts for free.
14:40.142 --> 14:47.844
[SPEAKER_01]: So what are waiting for go to JTViguals.com slash school that's JTViguals without the I and that school with a kick.
14:48.264 --> 14:49.185
[SPEAKER_01]: Now back to the show.
14:49.485 --> 14:54.466
[SPEAKER_00]: One thing that stands out about May's tavern, it doesn't feel like a restaurant or a bar.
14:54.606 --> 14:56.526
[SPEAKER_00]: It feels like a gathering place.
14:56.666 --> 14:59.387
[SPEAKER_00]: And that's what I would say, you know, that elevated experience.
14:59.467 --> 15:08.029
[SPEAKER_00]: I would like to say when I was thinking about it and going back up from me going there, I feel like it feels like a gathering place where everybody gathers together.
15:09.369 --> 15:14.992
[SPEAKER_00]: What do you want people to feel when they walk into May's tavern beyond community?
15:15.372 --> 15:16.133
[SPEAKER_00]: What would you say?
15:16.633 --> 15:19.354
[SPEAKER_02]: We just had a conversation about this on Monday night with our team.
15:19.914 --> 15:26.117
[SPEAKER_02]: I thought it was really important to break down some of those attributes or the vision moments, those details.
15:27.578 --> 15:28.919
[SPEAKER_02]: is warmth.
15:28.999 --> 15:32.261
[SPEAKER_02]: We want people to feel a warm vibe.
15:32.321 --> 15:39.246
[SPEAKER_02]: That's why I was really big on keeping the wood that warm vibe or that warm feel, the warm color of the wood.
15:40.307 --> 15:44.910
[SPEAKER_02]: We darken the color of the walls to make that again kind of create that a little bit more dark.
15:44.950 --> 15:46.551
[SPEAKER_02]: There's a psychology behind lighting.
15:46.651 --> 15:52.175
[SPEAKER_02]: That's really big on me or big for me to make sure that the lighting is set properly in the room.
15:53.295 --> 15:57.319
[SPEAKER_02]: Um, too much lighting actually creates a lot of anxiety, too much creates too much sleepiness.
15:58.000 --> 16:10.232
[SPEAKER_02]: There's a study out of, if I remember correctly, Harvard, and this is in regards to restaurants where, uh, a specific lumen in your, in your building will actually, uh, make people spend more money and stay longer.
16:10.573 --> 16:10.733
[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
16:11.533 --> 16:14.234
[SPEAKER_02]: And so that's what we're aiming for, obviously.
16:14.374 --> 16:19.855
[SPEAKER_02]: But we're also aiming for the more important part is that it is warm, it is that five.
16:20.115 --> 16:21.875
[SPEAKER_02]: Generosity is another big thing.
16:21.915 --> 16:24.055
[SPEAKER_02]: I want people to feel like this is a generous place.
16:24.656 --> 16:26.016
[SPEAKER_02]: It's not a free place, obviously.
16:26.056 --> 16:28.136
[SPEAKER_02]: We're not a non-for-profit.
16:28.296 --> 16:29.917
[SPEAKER_02]: But I want people to come in and go, OK.
16:31.177 --> 16:36.058
[SPEAKER_02]: The not only the guest field generous, hey, let me grab you a chair.
16:36.098 --> 16:37.418
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm so sorry, you know, like, let me,
16:37.878 --> 16:55.475
[SPEAKER_02]: move this that way or whatever or maybe it's just if you ever walk into a busy bar and there's one seat between every two people, you know, that generous, very authentic type of feel where they get up and you can sit here, it's sort of fine and they just move over a little bit.
16:56.135 --> 16:59.199
[SPEAKER_02]: very comfortable, if you will, authentic is another one.
16:59.439 --> 17:04.885
[SPEAKER_02]: I really want people to feel like when they walk in, it's not just someone behind the bar, having to say hello to them.
17:06.046 --> 17:09.090
[SPEAKER_02]: Instead, it is, I think, it's like, hey, welcome.
17:09.130 --> 17:10.591
[SPEAKER_02]: We're excited you to be here.
17:10.611 --> 17:12.473
[SPEAKER_02]: Please, coming grab a seat, I'll be right with you.
17:13.635 --> 17:18.340
[SPEAKER_02]: We want that very authentic type of feel that breeds hospitality.
17:19.280 --> 17:21.701
[SPEAKER_02]: And then that also, you know, bleeds into genuine care.
17:21.721 --> 17:23.622
[SPEAKER_02]: We want people to feel like we are genuine.
17:23.662 --> 17:26.623
[SPEAKER_02]: Now authenticity and genuine can kind of go hand in hand a little bit.
17:26.643 --> 17:29.764
[SPEAKER_02]: But genuine means so much more.
17:29.964 --> 17:32.225
[SPEAKER_02]: It really means that we are caring for people.
17:32.245 --> 17:33.245
[SPEAKER_02]: It is an action.
17:33.286 --> 17:35.226
[SPEAKER_02]: It is a, it's more than just service.
17:35.306 --> 17:36.927
[SPEAKER_02]: It's not me just bringing you a drink.
17:36.967 --> 17:37.207
[SPEAKER_02]: But it,
17:37.819 --> 17:40.681
[SPEAKER_02]: is bringing you a drink when you didn't know you needed it, right?
17:40.741 --> 17:48.345
[SPEAKER_02]: We're keeping an eye on, okay, they've been drinking water more over the last five minutes, that may be their time to start to leave.
17:48.445 --> 17:51.947
[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe they're on this on a timeline.
17:52.207 --> 17:58.491
[SPEAKER_02]: And so bring them a little bit more water and it's just a small touch point to figure out when they talk to people and not bug them.
17:58.571 --> 18:05.395
[SPEAKER_02]: So just that genuine care is if you were a guest in someone's home for a holiday weekend.
18:05.695 --> 18:05.895
[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
18:06.135 --> 18:11.718
[SPEAKER_02]: So those are really the four attributes that we want to try to bring forward at the bar and we want people to hopefully feel that.
18:11.958 --> 18:16.161
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I love that because I think people are craving that connection more now than ever.
18:16.281 --> 18:16.461
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
18:16.481 --> 18:16.641
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
18:16.861 --> 18:21.684
[SPEAKER_00]: And I think by feeling special, we all want to be seeing like, you know, because that's my hashtag, of course.
18:21.864 --> 18:22.084
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
18:22.104 --> 18:27.447
[SPEAKER_00]: With businesses to make sure they're seeing known and remember, but really in reality, all people want to be seen.
18:27.707 --> 18:27.867
[SPEAKER_02]: Right.
18:27.987 --> 18:28.808
[SPEAKER_00]: They want to be known.
18:28.908 --> 18:30.088
[SPEAKER_00]: And they want to be remembered.
18:30.148 --> 18:31.109
[SPEAKER_00]: And I feel like that.
18:31.569 --> 18:50.381
[SPEAKER_00]: you guys are hitting it right on the head by making that experience happen when they walk in the door are when they come back like you know when those little things like oh I know that you like remembering their name their name or what drinks their favorite or didn't want one of those today even more like remembering a conversation yeah
18:50.581 --> 18:51.882
[SPEAKER_02]: like it's one thing to remember your name.
18:51.942 --> 18:53.322
[SPEAKER_02]: Hey, Kathy, it's good to see you again.
18:53.382 --> 18:58.285
[SPEAKER_02]: You know, can I get you that that genentonic or like we were talking about whiskey's.
18:58.325 --> 18:59.345
[SPEAKER_02]: I know you said last year.
18:59.365 --> 19:00.325
[SPEAKER_02]: Really enjoyed the whiskey.
19:00.386 --> 19:01.946
[SPEAKER_02]: I think you tried the horse soldier.
19:01.966 --> 19:02.867
[SPEAKER_02]: If I remember.
19:02.907 --> 19:03.447
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, that.
19:03.987 --> 19:04.187
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
19:04.387 --> 19:06.748
[SPEAKER_02]: And so we were just talking about that.
19:06.768 --> 19:09.530
[SPEAKER_02]: And when the next time you come in, Mike, hey, can I grab you another poor or.
19:10.290 --> 19:21.756
[SPEAKER_02]: even more importantly, like listening and seeing your podcast and hearing about your family, I loved what one of the gentlemen here said, you know, asking about your husband and asking about family and stuff like that.
19:22.057 --> 19:23.657
[SPEAKER_02]: That's what matters to people.
19:23.718 --> 19:24.138
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
19:24.158 --> 19:27.660
[SPEAKER_00]: So like true connection, because we've been sold false enough.
19:27.880 --> 19:28.200
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, yeah.
19:28.420 --> 19:29.161
[SPEAKER_00]: everything you go.
19:29.181 --> 19:34.247
[SPEAKER_00]: You go on social media and everybody looks like this is the sod of everybody's happy and this is what it is.
19:34.728 --> 19:38.292
[SPEAKER_00]: But a place where you can go and just be real like you've had a bad day.
19:38.332 --> 19:42.037
[SPEAKER_00]: You could sit down and be like, hey, Danny, I've had a terrible day.
19:42.057 --> 19:43.779
[SPEAKER_00]: You be like, I got a drink for you.
19:43.839 --> 19:44.120
[SPEAKER_00]: Like,
19:44.800 --> 19:47.422
[SPEAKER_02]: And there's so many places in town you can go and get lost.
19:47.522 --> 19:53.767
[SPEAKER_02]: You know, it has a ton of TVs and games and activities you can get lost in the corner somewhere.
19:53.807 --> 19:56.529
[SPEAKER_02]: But there's not a lot of places where you can go and you can sit down.
19:56.589 --> 20:00.912
[SPEAKER_02]: It's not overly crowded, it's comfortable, it smells good, it's clean.
20:02.073 --> 20:06.597
[SPEAKER_02]: And you can literally just be amongst friends, you know, so it's very comfortable.
20:07.017 --> 20:07.177
[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
20:07.217 --> 20:07.397
[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
20:07.877 --> 20:11.979
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I know I just came to the Juneteenth social that you guys have put together.
20:12.779 --> 20:18.562
[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm telling you, it was amazing just to see, you know, we had just a few pop-up vendors.
20:18.722 --> 20:20.823
[SPEAKER_00]: We had like three vendors there, which was great.
20:21.543 --> 20:27.786
[SPEAKER_00]: And we had, you guys had the jazz band, and then we also had another band on the inside.
20:27.806 --> 20:27.906
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
20:28.647 --> 20:30.893
[SPEAKER_00]: And so I just loved that.
20:31.013 --> 20:37.609
[SPEAKER_00]: It was, I mean, people were flowing in and celebrating why do events like that matter to you?
20:38.276 --> 20:45.121
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh gosh, so there's a couple of things, I've had this question, you know, like what is May is really all about what's your identity?
20:45.762 --> 20:50.225
[SPEAKER_02]: You know, obviously I just shared some of our core values, if you will, our vision values.
20:51.566 --> 21:03.135
[SPEAKER_02]: More importantly, like the things that bring people together is family and friends, obviously they want to go somewhere, they want to gather together, food brings people together, sports brings people together.
21:03.155 --> 21:06.777
[SPEAKER_02]: I will tell you like sports brings our family together quite a bit,
21:07.758 --> 21:11.039
[SPEAKER_02]: Chiefs game Yes, Sundays are sacred.
21:11.439 --> 21:14.421
[SPEAKER_02]: You know for us because we get to watch the chiefs We get to watch football.
21:14.461 --> 21:21.343
[SPEAKER_02]: It's it's a relaxing day, but then also music music music brings people together I've been a drummer the majority of my life.
21:22.324 --> 21:23.084
[SPEAKER_02]: I love music.
21:23.244 --> 21:30.867
[SPEAKER_02]: I love all things music and so Events do all of those things Yeah, and we don't do events small like we're doing that.
21:30.907 --> 21:31.367
[SPEAKER_02]: We do a big
21:31.547 --> 21:37.410
[SPEAKER_00]: No, yeah, because I mean, from the front to the back, we had a band on the inside and they were shopping on the inside on outside.
21:37.430 --> 21:39.871
[SPEAKER_00]: There was a cigar bar, you have the cigars going.
21:40.511 --> 21:42.812
[SPEAKER_00]: And then the white are the whiskey flights.
21:42.872 --> 21:45.814
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm so used to seeing wine, but whiskey flights.
21:45.994 --> 21:47.855
[SPEAKER_00]: I taste both, isn't that normal?
21:48.095 --> 21:50.876
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but yeah, my brother got me into bourbon.
21:50.916 --> 21:53.698
[SPEAKER_00]: And so I've switched to whiskey and bourbon, pretty close.
21:53.738 --> 21:54.318
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah.
21:54.538 --> 22:00.121
[SPEAKER_00]: They're close, which surprises me, but I try it and everywhere I go, I'm up to trying something different.
22:00.242 --> 22:02.423
[SPEAKER_00]: And that was super smooth, super good.
22:02.463 --> 22:05.185
[SPEAKER_00]: I loved being able to try and taste the different ones.
22:05.365 --> 22:06.085
[SPEAKER_00]: That was nice.
22:06.105 --> 22:10.828
[SPEAKER_00]: Because sometimes you get a full pour of something you don't like and then you're like, ah,
22:11.288 --> 22:14.190
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, so like I spent how much on this drink.
22:14.290 --> 22:19.593
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah, whenever I do a tasting and so I go, okay, you're a little sample and I like this.
22:20.094 --> 22:22.375
[SPEAKER_02]: It's just enough to go, yeah.
22:22.815 --> 22:25.697
[SPEAKER_00]: And the fights are nice too, because it's like smaller pores of each one.
22:26.017 --> 22:27.198
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so I love that.
22:27.418 --> 22:31.981
[SPEAKER_00]: With WestPore and Kansas City, what makes WestPore special to you?
22:33.001 --> 22:34.982
[SPEAKER_02]: There's a lot of history behind Westport.
22:35.302 --> 22:46.567
[SPEAKER_02]: When we moved into the area, I did a lot of research on Westport looking into the battle of Westport and the base with the foundation of where Kansas City kind of came from.
22:47.647 --> 22:49.528
[SPEAKER_02]: And so I did a lot of history behind that.
22:49.628 --> 22:52.409
[SPEAKER_02]: I looked into a lot of history behind our homes and our neighborhood.
22:52.429 --> 22:59.512
[SPEAKER_02]: It was also interesting too, because Westport is all of the spaces, if you will, down off of that main street.
23:00.212 --> 23:06.274
[SPEAKER_02]: and then you have where we're at which is just like it's still Westport, but it's just on the outside.
23:06.494 --> 23:10.456
[SPEAKER_02]: And so we've connected with the West Plaza area, the Volker neighborhood.
23:10.516 --> 23:14.177
[SPEAKER_02]: So we know a little bit of both of those, but it's right there on that outskirt.
23:14.357 --> 23:22.380
[SPEAKER_02]: And so it's important because it's such a great little community and there's really cute little small communities in each little section and little space.
23:22.460 --> 23:27.242
[SPEAKER_02]: And so Westport has its thing and it's kind of known for its thing and then you have
23:27.942 --> 23:42.692
[SPEAKER_02]: where we're at just right there off of Westport Road in Roanoke area, where it really is that West Plaza kind of concept and that corridor that has all these really great little shops and tattoo artists and food and all the things.
23:43.132 --> 23:44.213
[SPEAKER_02]: In my opinion, I think it's kind of
23:45.277 --> 23:46.157
[SPEAKER_02]: I think there's two things that happen.
23:46.177 --> 23:48.199
[SPEAKER_02]: I think it's kind of a hidden gym, if you will.
23:49.319 --> 23:52.241
[SPEAKER_02]: I also think it's just kind of passed by.
23:52.261 --> 23:52.961
[SPEAKER_02]: Right.
23:52.981 --> 23:56.163
[SPEAKER_02]: There's a lot of traffic comes out of Kansas because we're not far from state line there.
23:56.383 --> 23:56.563
[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
23:56.803 --> 23:59.345
[SPEAKER_02]: Going to Westport or going to the Plaza.
23:59.545 --> 23:59.745
[SPEAKER_00]: Mm-hmm.
23:59.925 --> 24:01.626
[SPEAKER_02]: And so we just kind of get passed by a little bit.
24:01.746 --> 24:03.987
[SPEAKER_02]: And then on the way back out, they pass by us again.
24:04.548 --> 24:10.871
[SPEAKER_02]: But when they find us, when they find all of the little restaurants, they find all the little shops up and down Westport road there.
24:10.991 --> 24:12.052
[SPEAKER_02]: They're like holy smokes.
24:12.072 --> 24:12.712
[SPEAKER_02]: This has been here.
24:12.752 --> 24:13.653
[SPEAKER_02]: I didn't even know this was here.
24:14.753 --> 24:20.255
[SPEAKER_02]: And then they start coming back and they start coming back and they start coming back so it's a cute little area We love our neighborhood.
24:20.295 --> 24:23.477
[SPEAKER_02]: We love our neighbors You know that we all look out for each other.
24:23.657 --> 24:32.280
[SPEAKER_02]: That's what I really value a behind that Plus it's walkable like you can walk anywhere you want you can get a you know the coffee shop Multiple coffee shops in the area there.
24:32.401 --> 24:32.481
[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
24:32.621 --> 24:35.542
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, you can grab coffee you can get a tattoo
24:36.963 --> 24:39.006
[SPEAKER_02]: You can do your laundry if you want.
24:39.026 --> 24:42.931
[SPEAKER_02]: There's a couple really great little specific types of shops as well too.
24:43.011 --> 24:46.315
[SPEAKER_02]: There's a law office, but then there's great Mexican food.
24:46.355 --> 24:47.657
[SPEAKER_02]: There's Italian food.
24:47.717 --> 24:52.322
[SPEAKER_02]: There's a couple other little spots we take our dog to one of the dog shops up the street from us.
24:53.123 --> 24:54.083
[SPEAKER_02]: It's all right there.
24:54.364 --> 25:04.127
[SPEAKER_00]: That's what I think is so cool about that little strip right when you're at is there is there's this a touch of a little everything and I think you put it right I think people drive by and it gets missed.
25:04.207 --> 25:12.750
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you know on the way in to Westport What is one thing that you think people get wrong about Westport like what do you think the big misconception?
25:12.770 --> 25:18.092
[SPEAKER_00]: Do you think that some of that might be kind of going on or I think when people hear Westport?
25:19.252 --> 25:23.556
[SPEAKER_02]: When we first bought the place when people would hear Westport, they're like, oh, you're in Westport.
25:23.616 --> 25:28.260
[SPEAKER_02]: And so they would identify us down where kind of all the clubs are at.
25:28.360 --> 25:30.903
[SPEAKER_02]: And that's a little bit of the reason why, yeah, we're just outside of Westport.
25:30.923 --> 25:34.145
[SPEAKER_02]: We're in the West Plaza area because then that's when people go, I don't even know that was a thing.
25:35.166 --> 25:38.509
[SPEAKER_02]: And so I think when people hear Westport, they hear
25:39.390 --> 26:01.775
[SPEAKER_02]: It's young, it's club-y, it's, it's, it's, you know, made a little trouble depending upon, you know, it's an area, but there's so many little areas outside of Westport, you don't even know, and a lot of people don't even realize it, and it's kind of what's happening now in the city, you know, you have all the fanfests, you have all the big things that are going on, and people are going to those, for those experiences, and they're phenomenal.
26:01.795 --> 26:04.036
[SPEAKER_02]: I've heard so many great things about I want to go as well.
26:05.132 --> 26:08.896
[SPEAKER_02]: But there's so many other little great spots just outside of that.
26:09.336 --> 26:13.320
[SPEAKER_02]: And you can get to very quickly with public transportation.
26:13.480 --> 26:14.441
[SPEAKER_02]: It's not too far.
26:14.521 --> 26:16.083
[SPEAKER_02]: We'll walk if you're up for it.
26:16.143 --> 26:19.306
[SPEAKER_02]: But you could also hit that and then do an Uber and it's very inexpensive.
26:19.346 --> 26:28.676
[SPEAKER_02]: So coming from the Northland or North Kansas City down to the plaza and then taking a quick Uber up to multiple little shops in our area.
26:29.318 --> 26:29.979
[SPEAKER_02]: It's not that hard.
26:29.999 --> 26:43.172
[SPEAKER_02]: So I think that's the misconception is that it's hard to get to or there's horrible parking or you know, it because it has the West port area behind it is that it's going to be trouble and honestly knock on wood.
26:43.672 --> 26:45.274
[SPEAKER_02]: We really don't have a lot of issues.
26:45.614 --> 26:47.015
[SPEAKER_00]: No, no, not at all.
26:47.115 --> 26:48.517
[SPEAKER_00]: I never have through their either.
26:48.637 --> 27:03.409
[SPEAKER_00]: And I think, and I'm hoping even through be life changers in this podcast, I can bring out a lot of those small businesses like yourself because there's so many like you said in Westport, there is so many small businesses that I didn't just get overlooked, like drive right by.
27:03.429 --> 27:08.454
[SPEAKER_00]: And it's hard you're driving and you're thinking about getting to work or going to where you're going.
27:08.494 --> 27:09.755
[SPEAKER_00]: And so sometimes we don't,
27:10.155 --> 27:24.423
[SPEAKER_00]: like get to you're driving by so quickly of course having to watch the traffic because the road you know you don't always get to see some of the places to the left and right of you and there's so many hidden gems all over Kansas City.
27:24.843 --> 27:28.065
[SPEAKER_00]: We are so blessed with so many small businesses.
27:28.605 --> 27:41.194
[SPEAKER_00]: And so I just hope that, you know, even this podcast gives a light to, and people come and see it and experience and know because May's tavern is just amazing for sure for sure.
27:41.715 --> 27:47.619
[SPEAKER_00]: One thing I love is that we're not just hosting events, but we're creating experiences and bringing people together.
27:47.639 --> 27:48.640
[SPEAKER_00]: That's what both of us do.
27:49.560 --> 27:54.982
[SPEAKER_00]: And so I love how we're coming together and going to be doing some things here in the future.
27:55.062 --> 27:55.322
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
27:55.662 --> 28:01.224
[SPEAKER_00]: I kind of laugh when we got together and we came up with some ideas and then Monique and I kind of passed those back to you.
28:01.444 --> 28:05.485
[SPEAKER_00]: What did you think when you heard us say the murder mystery pop up?
28:05.565 --> 28:07.866
[SPEAKER_00]: What was your first impression?
28:08.806 --> 28:11.967
[SPEAKER_02]: So it was funny because I saw it and I was like, all that's going to be really cool.
28:12.047 --> 28:13.608
[SPEAKER_02]: And then I told my wife and she goes,
28:15.147 --> 28:29.017
[SPEAKER_02]: I don't be interesting and I said yeah, I think it will be you know, but I mean like these are things that no one in our area has done you know, I'm I don't know if you do know the the author and he is big on leadership Simon cynic
28:30.352 --> 28:51.310
[SPEAKER_02]: the name sounds familiar so he he does a number of different books and and they're fantastic and I'll recommend a few of them for you But he always talks about challenging the status quo and never settling for less than what you deserve and so my big thing is I like challenging that status quo Yeah, we're a bar yeah, we're a restaurant and there's a lot of people looking me to go we do it this way and I might
28:52.388 --> 29:00.250
[SPEAKER_02]: That's cool, but I'm gonna do it my way, you know, and it's not that my way is right and it's not the way that my way is wrong, but it is a way that is different.
29:00.590 --> 29:01.731
[SPEAKER_02]: And I want it, it doesn't work.
29:01.991 --> 29:02.531
[SPEAKER_02]: Will it work?
29:02.651 --> 29:13.714
[SPEAKER_02]: And I think that the events we've proven, the events that we've put on have worked really well to bring people together and we've seen positive vibes about how that and partnering with the right people.
29:13.734 --> 29:18.135
[SPEAKER_02]: It's like bringing more people into see that is really kind of where we're pushing in now.
29:19.115 --> 29:22.518
[SPEAKER_02]: And I think the murder mystery idea as a theme.
29:22.878 --> 29:24.119
[SPEAKER_02]: I love the idea of a theme.
29:24.399 --> 29:25.000
[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
29:25.260 --> 29:26.441
[SPEAKER_02]: We have an event this Saturday.
29:26.481 --> 29:27.202
[SPEAKER_02]: It's a big theme.
29:27.262 --> 29:27.622
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
29:27.842 --> 29:28.723
[SPEAKER_02]: All right.
29:28.823 --> 29:32.385
[SPEAKER_02]: It's a little bit of a fundraiser as well, not to shamelessly plug.
29:32.426 --> 29:33.927
[SPEAKER_00]: But right now we're head.
29:34.607 --> 29:37.089
[SPEAKER_02]: But anyways, so, but there's themes behind that.
29:37.109 --> 29:43.112
[SPEAKER_02]: So I think people buy into the theme cut and come right I think everybody is seeking an experience as well.
29:43.192 --> 29:52.177
[SPEAKER_00]: And that's what Monique and I have found we do more elevated events so you know, like I'm known to have all my events and castles, my interest all clubs, my memories.
29:52.197 --> 29:54.599
[SPEAKER_00]: That's what I've known for when I did the event side of things.
29:55.099 --> 29:59.662
[SPEAKER_00]: Now that I've let Monique kind of take over, she loves that same idea of keeping it up and going.
29:59.722 --> 30:04.524
[SPEAKER_00]: So when we saw it, we were like, oh, this would be something cool that it would be a little bit different.
30:04.704 --> 30:06.205
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's going a little bit different.
30:06.225 --> 30:13.249
[SPEAKER_00]: We know that, but we are partnering with someone who they're very good at doing all the game tables and game or stuff.
30:14.369 --> 30:17.892
[SPEAKER_00]: Like Dungeons and Dragons, although I kind of stuff and they do all the role-playing.
30:18.412 --> 30:23.815
[SPEAKER_00]: So we're bringing them into kind of, they'll be like characters walking around, helping with it.
30:24.016 --> 30:26.817
[SPEAKER_00]: So it's not going to be like people are confused or anything.
30:27.238 --> 30:33.902
[SPEAKER_00]: But then you'll have your pop-up shopping and the great amazing food that you already have, and the space that you already have.
30:33.942 --> 30:37.765
[SPEAKER_00]: So be looking for that guy, so it's going to be October 11th.
30:38.325 --> 30:42.648
[SPEAKER_00]: And so be looking for that, we'll give more details later, but we'll just kind of give a sneak peek.
30:42.948 --> 30:57.309
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, so and another thing that we have to that we do together is giving back through community so, you know, and so that's kind of like we have that coming up with our friends giving that we're going to do with you in November.
30:57.469 --> 30:57.670
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
30:58.050 --> 31:03.656
[SPEAKER_00]: And so, and I don't even know if you know this part, but that happens to end up on my son's birthday.
31:03.676 --> 31:17.549
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, the Gabriel's birthday is on the 15th of November, and so we're going to do a big give back thing, so we'll be talking about and I'll talk to you more about like any places that you want to, you know, keep in the mix of that.
31:17.749 --> 31:39.732
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, for giving back, but Gabriel gives is the big thing he's he goes around and make sure that he shows his local love by sharing from one business to another and so or he'll go back in the community and non-profit and help there like hanging up closer whatever and then we use the social media to shout out what they need.
31:40.332 --> 32:04.635
[SPEAKER_00]: And so that he's our little influencer so he goes around so he'll be joining us that day for that event And we're going to pick one place, which we'll do that together Okay, but so be thinking about it because we don't know yet Who they were so we're not gonna announce who it is, but somebody's gonna be really special because we're gonna give back and have everybody comes that day Bring to that cause okay Gabriel I thought was his birthday we might as well just
32:05.656 --> 32:08.720
[SPEAKER_00]: up, you know, and let him experience that as well.
32:08.760 --> 32:09.561
[SPEAKER_00]: Cause amazing.
32:09.601 --> 32:11.543
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I feel like that fits with me.
32:11.563 --> 32:12.164
[SPEAKER_00]: It's perfectly.
32:12.184 --> 32:12.625
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, for sure.
32:12.825 --> 32:13.105
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
32:13.145 --> 32:13.866
[SPEAKER_00]: So perfectly.
32:13.946 --> 32:16.349
[SPEAKER_00]: So we're going to excited about that event as well.
32:16.830 --> 32:19.052
[SPEAKER_00]: And I know you have many more events coming up too.
32:19.393 --> 32:19.993
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, yeah.
32:20.094 --> 32:20.734
[SPEAKER_00]: All the time.
32:20.855 --> 32:21.395
[SPEAKER_00]: All the time.
32:21.435 --> 32:22.256
[SPEAKER_00]: Watch parties.
32:23.057 --> 32:38.025
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I mean, while you said, you know, FIFA's in town, you know, we've been opening just about every day around 2 o'clock for, you know, the early games that are on, you know, and we're, you know, pushing those, obviously, we partner with a singles group in town.
32:38.225 --> 32:38.665
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
32:39.005 --> 32:42.487
[SPEAKER_02]: They come out usually two times a month, if you're single.
32:43.190 --> 32:49.700
[SPEAKER_02]: Hit me up, but not to hit me up, but you'll come come to the bar and you can come and enjoy.
32:50.061 --> 32:51.783
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, my wife wouldn't let you know.
32:52.124 --> 32:53.626
[SPEAKER_02]: Don't hit me up because you'll hit me.
32:55.515 --> 32:57.936
[SPEAKER_02]: So anyways, so the singles groups are amazing.
32:57.956 --> 33:00.777
[SPEAKER_02]: That's another way to get back to the community and really bring people together.
33:01.558 --> 33:04.359
[SPEAKER_02]: It also brings people in from all across the city.
33:04.379 --> 33:08.361
[SPEAKER_02]: But we do a music bingo night.
33:08.401 --> 33:09.662
[SPEAKER_02]: We do trivia every Thursdays.
33:09.682 --> 33:11.602
[SPEAKER_02]: So we're always constantly doing something.
33:11.702 --> 33:13.223
[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, definitely come support.
33:13.823 --> 33:15.504
[SPEAKER_00]: There's things to do all the time.
33:15.684 --> 33:17.205
[SPEAKER_00]: Where can they follow you at?
33:17.325 --> 33:19.566
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, a mace tavern on Instagram is usually the biggest one.
33:20.407 --> 33:25.410
[SPEAKER_02]: We're constantly posting every day on our stories about things that are happening, new specials that are happening.
33:26.219 --> 33:33.845
[SPEAKER_02]: Um, you know, a lot of different things on our actual page, you know, talking through different events, different things are going to be going on.
33:34.505 --> 33:38.588
[SPEAKER_02]: Um, so yeah, maize tavern on Instagram, maize tavern on TikTok as well.
33:38.628 --> 33:39.609
[SPEAKER_02]: We're on Facebook as well.
33:39.729 --> 33:40.289
[SPEAKER_02]: Maize tavern.
33:40.530 --> 33:41.130
[SPEAKER_02]: Maize tavern.
33:41.170 --> 33:42.171
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it's all on there.
33:42.231 --> 33:47.294
[SPEAKER_02]: So, um, we've tried to keep it simple and then maize tavern.com, size our website.
33:47.335 --> 33:51.958
[SPEAKER_02]: So, M-A-E-S-T-A-V-E-R-N, maize tavern.
33:52.238 --> 33:52.478
[SPEAKER_00]: Awesome.
33:52.699 --> 33:53.580
[SPEAKER_00]: Thank you.
33:53.660 --> 33:56.304
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, we're going to do something a little fun before we close out today.
33:56.684 --> 33:57.946
[SPEAKER_00]: I call it my rapid fire.
33:58.006 --> 33:58.266
[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
33:58.386 --> 34:02.071
[SPEAKER_00]: So this is going to help people know when they come in some things to try.
34:02.192 --> 34:02.372
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
34:02.392 --> 34:03.413
[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
34:03.433 --> 34:05.896
[SPEAKER_00]: So you are favorite menu item.
34:07.467 --> 34:11.848
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, he's like, what I love the spicy chicken bites.
34:12.829 --> 34:20.191
[SPEAKER_02]: I know that's not like an entree, but the spicy chicken bites are a favorite go-to of mine and so many other people will say come in.
34:20.371 --> 34:21.211
[SPEAKER_00]: I love it spicy.
34:21.231 --> 34:21.831
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm gonna have to try those.
34:21.851 --> 34:22.591
[SPEAKER_00]: I haven't tried those yet.
34:22.611 --> 34:23.151
[SPEAKER_00]: So gotta try them.
34:23.291 --> 34:25.112
[SPEAKER_00]: Most underrated menu item.
34:26.079 --> 34:33.705
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh gosh, in my opinion, I think that would probably be the, the ham and cheese melt that we have.
34:33.785 --> 34:35.246
[SPEAKER_02]: We just added it.
34:35.326 --> 34:43.452
[SPEAKER_02]: I had these two young ladies, they came in the other day and they tried it and she was like, holy smokes, that was the best sandwich I've ever had.
34:44.133 --> 34:45.894
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it is the most underrated, for sure.
34:46.214 --> 34:46.535
[SPEAKER_00]: Awesome.
34:47.035 --> 34:47.996
[SPEAKER_00]: And Casper's favorite.
34:48.536 --> 34:49.457
[SPEAKER_02]: We do a lot of burgers.
34:50.353 --> 34:52.015
[SPEAKER_02]: We do a lot of really good burgers.
34:52.135 --> 35:00.007
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, our bacon cheeseburgers are number one sandwich cell or that or Possibly the patty melden ribbon would be probably a tight second.
35:00.147 --> 35:02.510
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay awesome favorite drink on the menu
35:04.568 --> 35:14.953
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, I'm a beer guy, you know, so I love Kona or Blumen, but we do have some new cartels getting ready to release too, so the girls are always constantly having to keep in me drunk.
35:15.373 --> 35:15.853
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm just kidding.
35:15.873 --> 35:16.353
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm really drunk.
35:16.373 --> 35:18.694
[SPEAKER_02]: But they're always keeping me in a testing phase.
35:18.714 --> 35:20.275
[SPEAKER_02]: I always get to test the new cartels.
35:20.295 --> 35:21.255
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, I got to get a test.
35:21.315 --> 35:22.436
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to come in and test the new.
35:22.456 --> 35:23.256
[SPEAKER_00]: Come on in.
35:23.316 --> 35:23.516
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
35:23.536 --> 35:24.536
[SPEAKER_02]: We'll schedule a testing day.
35:24.597 --> 35:25.497
[SPEAKER_02]: I'll come in and try it.
35:25.557 --> 35:25.697
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
35:26.397 --> 35:26.697
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
35:26.757 --> 35:27.798
[SPEAKER_00]: Favorite thing about Westport.
35:29.576 --> 35:29.976
[SPEAKER_02]: access.
35:30.016 --> 35:32.258
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, you can really get to it from anywhere you go.
35:33.098 --> 35:44.928
[SPEAKER_02]: You know, you're especially our location because I mean, right there next to the Country Club Plaza, we're right there next to all the good old great homes from the Volker and West Plaza area, but then pre-village mission is all right there as well.
35:44.968 --> 35:48.611
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, we're literally within 10 to 15 minutes of almost anywhere you want to come from.
35:48.871 --> 35:49.571
[SPEAKER_00]: That's so true.
35:49.752 --> 35:49.892
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
35:50.172 --> 35:51.473
[SPEAKER_00]: Favorite thing about Kansas City?
35:51.713 --> 35:52.854
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm a big sports guy.
35:52.954 --> 35:56.618
[SPEAKER_02]: I've lived here, you know, I grew up here in Kansas City.
35:56.738 --> 35:58.840
[SPEAKER_02]: So my favorite thing about it is sports.
35:58.920 --> 35:59.901
[SPEAKER_02]: We are a sports town.
36:01.042 --> 36:04.806
[SPEAKER_02]: We are a baseball and football town and people rally around it.
36:04.906 --> 36:07.268
[SPEAKER_02]: And it's really great to see the community come together.
36:07.288 --> 36:09.650
[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, yes, yes, yes, and now it's soccer.
36:09.871 --> 36:12.113
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, I say right now, you're really feeling it.
36:12.133 --> 36:13.774
[SPEAKER_00]: And I hope we just keep on with that.
36:13.814 --> 36:14.135
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah.
36:14.455 --> 36:15.976
[SPEAKER_00]: favorite thing about maze tavern.
36:16.356 --> 36:17.696
[SPEAKER_02]: It is my home away from home.
36:17.896 --> 36:19.777
[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I spend a lot of time there and it's comfortable.
36:20.057 --> 36:27.020
[SPEAKER_02]: That's that's my favorite thing for me as someone that that does go to other bars and and does go out and hang out with friends and stuff.
36:27.681 --> 36:30.702
[SPEAKER_02]: That is that is one of my favorite favorite things about it.
36:31.339 --> 36:35.280
[SPEAKER_00]: All right, well, thank you for joining us on another episode of Be Like Changers.
36:35.761 --> 36:45.944
[SPEAKER_00]: If there's one thing I hope you take away from this conversation is that every person has a story, every person has value, and every person has the ability to make a difference.
36:46.345 --> 36:49.292
[SPEAKER_00]: You don't have to change the whole world overnight.
36:49.412 --> 36:51.416
[SPEAKER_00]: You can change it one day at a time.
36:51.937 --> 36:57.008
[SPEAKER_00]: Be that encouragement, be that connection, and be the reason to keep going on.
36:57.409 --> 37:03.021
[SPEAKER_00]: And so next time, I'm Kathy Codes and remember your purpose, his plan in business and in life.
