00 [SPEAKER_01]: totally different things. [SPEAKER_01]: We're not going in and diagnosing things. [SPEAKER_01]: She came and she goes, I have been at the gym so many times complaining about this and she's like, my skin has never looked better. [SPEAKER_00]: And it was a quick, in-out, 15 minutes. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it was super fast or stuff that affects your skin that just because it's on on the label doesn't mean it's not affecting your skin. [SPEAKER_02]: Hey guys, welcome back to a skin-paste pond. [SPEAKER_02]: I'm your host Lena, License Estition, and today I have Georgia toward the Davenport License Estition. [SPEAKER_01]: Kelsey, Kelsey Rhodes, Estition of Prentice. [SPEAKER_02]: And Kristin. [SPEAKER_01]: Kristin Samborn, License to Estition. [SPEAKER_02]: And today we're going to kind of talk about scuba practice more on the lines of what we get asked a lot.

43 [SPEAKER_02]: And where we kind of see where we get a lot of these questions at in appointments. [SPEAKER_02]: I know that you get a lot of these questions [SPEAKER_03]: Well I think it's what we can do and what we can't do and you know kind of what our scope of practices. [SPEAKER_03]: The difference between what we do and a dermatologist does is a dermatologist diagnosis like skin cancers, skin disorders and we will treat skin conditions. [SPEAKER_03]: And so that's two totally different things. [SPEAKER_03]: We're not going in and diagnosing things even though we do know how to [SPEAKER_03]: spot difference. [SPEAKER_03]: Again, issues. [SPEAKER_02]: We can tell you this box looks kind of funky and we really think you need to get it looked at.

24 [SPEAKER_02]: But we cannot say this is cancer. [SPEAKER_00]: We know what looks normal and what looks abnormal. [SPEAKER_03]: And then the rest is up to the German talk. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and I think that's another leading into, it doesn't hurt to come see us first. [SPEAKER_03]: I've had different clients that come in. [SPEAKER_03]: They're like, I've got this little spot here, and I've been putting off going to the dermatologist about it, and I take a look at it. [SPEAKER_03]: It's just skin tag. [SPEAKER_03]: Yes. [SPEAKER_03]: And something that we can fix, skin tags, caratosis spots, or they have a rough spot on the top of their head. [SPEAKER_03]: And they're like, I'm just really scared. [SPEAKER_03]: This is skin cancer, and we can look at it. [SPEAKER_03]: It's like, [SPEAKER_03]: isn't that it's like okay we're going to refer you on to somewhere else.

06 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, what is like scope of practice? [SPEAKER_02]: Like it's all licensing, um, regular, like it's, uh, licensing based, which varies. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, like some states are real, are, uh, more lags and some states are like really strict. [SPEAKER_02]: Like there's some states, you can't, STs just cannot germ a plane in. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: That is out of our scope of practice. [SPEAKER_02]: But in Missouri, we can germ a plane, we can, um, [SPEAKER_03]: under a medical director you can depend upon what laser it is under a medical director we have a wonderful medical director that you know we ever have issues work consulting and and talking to him even some peels some peels you can't do I think Kansas is pretty strict [SPEAKER_01]: And this is a lot more strict than Missouri is Nebraska out of all of the states around us is the like most restricted.

56 [SPEAKER_01]: Really. [SPEAKER_01]: Really. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: So, and I just say that based off of like the sale side of things working with a lot of STs up there, like there is so much that they cannot do. [SPEAKER_01]: Really. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: Missouri is the I always joke, Missouri is the wild west when it comes to licensing, especially with injectors. [SPEAKER_01]: But that's a whole other. [SPEAKER_03]: Mm-hmm. [SPEAKER_02]: I suppose there's, there's the Missouri, there's so many, like some eyelash extensions. [SPEAKER_02]: You don't have to be an extension in the state of Missouri, but like in Kansas, you do. [SPEAKER_01]: I think SprayTans too. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't think you have to be licensed. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, you have to be certified certified and Missouri to do SprayTans. [SPEAKER_02]: But with that is for the esthetician side of this conversation, you always need to go check with your board before you offer treatments.

43 [SPEAKER_02]: You need to make sure that what you want to offer is in your scope of practice, because I decide to do this podcast episode because I saw some stuff on Instagram. [SPEAKER_02]: And it was, a lot of us is like, oh, you can do that. [SPEAKER_02]: We can do that and it's like, they may be able to in their state. [SPEAKER_02]: But we may not be able to in our state. [SPEAKER_02]: The posters, like, yeah, that's legal. [SPEAKER_02]: Maybe in your state. [SPEAKER_01]: But I think that turns into like patients coming in and asking, like we've talked about social media so much. [SPEAKER_01]: I feel like every episode that people are like, oh, I saw so and so, licensed institution talking about this and that they do this with their patients, can you guys do this? [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: or I had no idea that you could do that because you see online that estheticians can't do them a plane.

26 [SPEAKER_00]: They can't do lasers. [SPEAKER_00]: They can't do all that stuff. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I talked about it. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, it's like California's, like you can't even make her need to let go of California. [SPEAKER_01]: Like it's like California is straight. [SPEAKER_01]: California's so, so strict. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: And so all depends on what as the on the esthetician side of this conversation, your scope of practice will be within your state licensing and your state boards. [SPEAKER_02]: So always go check with them. [SPEAKER_02]: Because I mean, if you go out of your scope practice, they will take your license. [SPEAKER_01]: It's funny that you brought this episode up because when you sent it to us, I had just seen a like tick talk earlier in the day of a licensed institution talking, you know, basically educating people like, hey, like just remember what you [SPEAKER_02]: those state board is watching your social media and they are booking appointments that you don't know that it's the state board and they are coming in and booking appointments and but like ask you the questions yes to test to make sure it's like you are not stepping outside of your scope of practice you are not diagnosing you are not doing things that you are not supposed to be doing and that is another thing is always watch what you're posting in social media too because they will see that and they can still strip your license from it.

32 [SPEAKER_03]: Yep, which is good because you want to make sure that those practitioners out there have their patients are their clients first and foremost. [SPEAKER_03]: And so if you are going as a client going to a facility and you look around and it's not super clean. [SPEAKER_03]: You know, they're not using good sanitation procedures. [SPEAKER_03]: I think, I mean, this is kind of off topic, but I one of the things that really gets me is when I go into a nail salon and I'm getting my nails done. [SPEAKER_03]: And my nail tech is pulling a file or something out of a cup and using a mommy and then sticks it back in there. [SPEAKER_03]: And that's my sign that's like, oh, [SPEAKER_03]: Because that's cross-contamination, same thing with your esthetician, if you're walking into an aesthetic room and, you know, they don't have good sanitation procedure and you're just seeing stuff just everywhere.

25 [SPEAKER_03]: Things can get past from one client to another. [SPEAKER_03]: Sanitation is 100% one of those things that you don't want to compromise. [SPEAKER_03]: So that's just kind of my... Sheeper? [SPEAKER_01]: It doesn't always mean... Oh. [SPEAKER_01]: better too. [SPEAKER_01]: I feel like a lot of your offices or places that you go that it's like oh I got a deal here and then you walk in it's exactly that it's like oh that's kind of gross here and gross here. [SPEAKER_01]: They're cutting corners somewhere to offer that. [SPEAKER_00]: All the times you're paying for the quality you're getting. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, it's in that education too. [SPEAKER_01]: That is I mean talking about scope of practice but just you know continuing education and things like that too. [SPEAKER_02]: Where do we [SPEAKER_02]: I would say for me is that they're molasses.

07 [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I think so too. [SPEAKER_03]: I think removing skin tags. [SPEAKER_03]: Some of those things you can go to a dermatologist and have them. [SPEAKER_03]: Remove a skin tag. [SPEAKER_02]: Walking out of our scope of crisis with their molasses is moles. [SPEAKER_02]: We cannot remove moles. [SPEAKER_03]: Yes. [SPEAKER_03]: Some dermatologists won't mess with those with it. [SPEAKER_03]: Cheering in, GMOs, with the caretosis spots, with the skin tags, just because they're just ugly spots. [SPEAKER_03]: They're cosmetic. [SPEAKER_02]: They're cosmetic. [SPEAKER_03]: And you know, they, their time is very valuable. [SPEAKER_03]: And so they don't want to have to deal with those types of things. [SPEAKER_02]: And they just don't have a lot of time. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Like if you've ever been to Dermatology for me, it's quick. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: But it takes like 10 years to get into it. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: So if you're looking at, you've got skin tags on your upper body, you've got, you know, the cherry angiomas.

50 [SPEAKER_03]: The, what a carotose spot is is if you have like a dark spot on your skin. [SPEAKER_03]: And sometimes a carotose spot does look like a mole. [SPEAKER_03]: But let us look at it first. [SPEAKER_03]: Usually if it's rough. [SPEAKER_03]: Um, then that's that's a caratosis spot flat and we can remove those come in schedule consultation. [SPEAKER_03]: Let us take a look at them and a lot of times it's a quick and easy thing 15 minutes and your treatments done depending on what kind of facial you're getting to that we can even have great guys super quick and easy just let us know [SPEAKER_01]: Or if you've gone to your dorm and they have a spot that they're like, oh, like, this is just cosmetic. [SPEAKER_01]: You know, I can do X, Y, Z, but I don't really have time to do that.

31 [SPEAKER_01]: Like, I had a girlfriend that texted me after she went to the dorm because she had had some spots on her face and she's like, they just bothered her and the dorm was like, yeah, I don't know what they were suspicious. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: There were some things to be just, that's what it was. [SPEAKER_01]: She just means she's like, hey, I saw that you had this machine, like, can you guys do this? [SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, absolutely, she came and she goes, I've been at the gym so many times complaining about this. [SPEAKER_01]: And she's like, my skin has never looked better. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: And it was a quick, in-out, 15 minutes. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it was super fast. [SPEAKER_03]: Sometimes, if the gym says, oh, it's no big deal. [SPEAKER_03]: Don't worry about it. [SPEAKER_03]: But because of a lot of times we can work on those, that's it within our scope or practice. [SPEAKER_03]: It may be something that they don't think is something that they really want to tackle.

11 [SPEAKER_03]: But that's that's kind of our scope, because that's bothering you. [SPEAKER_00]: It's a big deal. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: But also if you come in ask me like a spot and it is some I'm a little bit concerned about. [SPEAKER_02]: I will not tell you what it is. [SPEAKER_02]: Well, I won't say a this is skin cancer. [SPEAKER_02]: I will not say that. [SPEAKER_02]: I will just refer you to a don't because we don't know how to diagnose that we sometimes we know that but it's always better to be safe. [SPEAKER_03]: Sorry. [SPEAKER_02]: Say it like you can't say this is like you cannot say that. [SPEAKER_03]: We'll use the word suspicious or it doesn't look right or has it been will ask the questions has it been oozing for a while has it is it just a sore that goes away and comes back what is it doing and then that kind of gives us more of an idea of whether it is something we can treat and I will have some clients that I would be like okay and would you go to dermatologists have it checked out from dermatologists first before I will attempt to treat it and then they say give me the green light come back and then I will treat it.

06 [SPEAKER_02]: I do that a lot on either thing looks a little bit suspicious. [SPEAKER_02]: Just go have it cleared by your Durham to be on the safe side and then come back. [SPEAKER_03]: And sometimes it's on the top of your head where you can't really see or if you have something in the back that's itching, you know, it may just be a bug bite. [SPEAKER_03]: But come in or I've even had a couple of pimples. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: and infected hair follicles on the head and they were really worried about it being cancer but then we were able to go ahead and extract and then I went away, you know, think about stuff like like the back of your ears if you have source in the back of your ears or on the top of your head kind of things because you can get blackheads in your ears. [SPEAKER_03]: You can get pimples in your ears. [SPEAKER_03]: We love teenage boys when they come in with [SPEAKER_03]: big old blackheads and pimples in their ears.

49 [SPEAKER_03]: Keep that in mind that a lot we can treat a lot of those. [SPEAKER_03]: Another one is acne. [SPEAKER_03]: You got to kind of as a session in Missouri. [SPEAKER_02]: You got to kind of, I don't and I don't know everyone's licensing regulations. [SPEAKER_02]: I just know Missouri's. [SPEAKER_02]: Sometimes you got to really watch what you're diagnosing with your acne clients. [SPEAKER_02]: Some cystic acne is kind of [SPEAKER_02]: Great, not really great, but it's you need to refer out to Durham if you have any questions. [SPEAKER_02]: There's different guidelines for out there. [SPEAKER_00]: And there's only so much we can treat and at a point in our training room. [SPEAKER_03]: Yes, a little bit more. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: And sometimes, you know, if you have a medication, we cannot tell anyone to take medication or to stop a medication.

32 [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: There's different grades of acne. [SPEAKER_03]: If you have like a more of a cystate type of acne, you know, there's things that we can do. [SPEAKER_03]: But also, those are the extreme cases where you may need to get on an acne medication, or you may need to make, you know, go and check your hormones. [SPEAKER_03]: Those kind of things that we can't fix it until you get something else under control. [SPEAKER_01]: And we want to help you, whether if that is referring out to someone else or not. [SPEAKER_01]: And so we've got making claims that like things are pregnancy states. [SPEAKER_01]: I think that's a big one too is you'll have people coming back. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, well, can I use this when I'm pregnant? [SPEAKER_01]: Because I saw so-and-so life and substitution was using it when they were pregnant. [SPEAKER_01]: And it's like, I can't tell you that.

13 [SPEAKER_01]: Like, it's not been tested. [SPEAKER_01]: Like, you have to go ask your provider. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: and also like as some medications can like with laser can interfere. [SPEAKER_02]: We can tell you what the contraindications are. [SPEAKER_02]: We can tell you that maybe this medication you're taking is going to cause an issue with the laser, but we cannot tell you to stop your medication and we cannot tell you to go start a medication. [SPEAKER_01]: Like some people a bit of gel cream or something after a wax. [SPEAKER_02]: I'd like to say thank you you take it, but I'm not. [SPEAKER_03]: go tell you to take it and I've had some laser clients where I will because you before you come in you will have to fill out a form or check off a form of medications I'll go through their medication form and I go okay we can't take this medication when you are doing laser treatments I need you to go to your doctor I need you to [SPEAKER_03]: tell them what we're doing and then get a release from them.

01 [SPEAKER_03]: My recommendation would be two weeks ahead of your treatment. [SPEAKER_03]: You need to talk to your doctor and get released from taking your medicine because little things that we don't think of as peels is, you know, you're in a depressants. [SPEAKER_03]: Sometimes if you're doing some more evasive a GLP1 will cause your skin to be more reactive. [SPEAKER_03]: If you are on high blood pressure medication, that could cause some adverse reactions. [SPEAKER_03]: And I'm not going to tell you you have to quit taking your blood pressure medication. [SPEAKER_02]: That's why you have to find something else to do. [SPEAKER_02]: You can do that if we can't do certain treatments. [SPEAKER_02]: We can tell you what can happen and how they can interact with each other, but we cannot tell you to stop taking any medications. [SPEAKER_00]: And this is a great reason whenever we're asking you about the medication.

42 [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, that's every yes, because I've had a lot of clients. [SPEAKER_00]: We'll stuff that doesn't affect my skin. [SPEAKER_00]: It does. [SPEAKER_00]: There's stuff that affects your skin that just because it's on on the label doesn't mean it's not affecting your skin. [SPEAKER_02]: Yes, there's so many things in consultations that clients just don't think really are important. [SPEAKER_02]: And in retrospect, they are very important. [SPEAKER_02]: So if you just tell us everything you're taking, because even some vitamins. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, like a vitamin A. Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Whether you're a teenager or you have a dull acne, you don't have to live with it. [SPEAKER_02]: Clear healthier skin is possible. [SPEAKER_02]: Download our app, amazingly ageless, and book your appointment online today, or give us a call. [SPEAKER_00]: Your skin deserves it. [SPEAKER_02]: and then also any allergies at all, food allergies.

24 [SPEAKER_02]: Yes, every allergy, like I had a client that had oh, she was allergic to beeswax. [SPEAKER_02]: And at this time, we were using a wax that had some sort of like rosin in it or something that was, and she had allergic reaction, and she was like, the only thing I'm allergic is beeswax, that's like, [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, that's what you have on the set or see or anything like that absorbic acid. [SPEAKER_03]: If you have, if you can't drink orange juice and it causes you to have cancer source or it causes you to have upset stomach, then you're going to have to really sit back and think about, you know, doing anything with vitamin C, doing citrus acid, doing enzymes because most of your enzymes are a fruit-based product and so we're going to have to really [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, pineapple, pineapple is another big one.

12 [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah, yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: There's a lot of pineapple enzymes and stuff. [SPEAKER_02]: There's a lot of pineapple allergies. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_03]: Yes. [SPEAKER_03]: And so those are those are really important when we're looking at our scope of practice. [SPEAKER_03]: We can tell you that, you know, let's not doing cornstarchs or something like that. [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, we can't do like the consultation of just let us know everything you're using everything that you're allergic to. [SPEAKER_03]: And milk. [SPEAKER_03]: Milk is another thing. [SPEAKER_03]: If you're lactose intolerant and you cannot tolerate milk, lactic acid is made from milk. [SPEAKER_03]: We use lactic acid in peels, especially when you're looking at brightening peels and acne peels, they're going to have your lactic acid in it. [SPEAKER_03]: And so that could cause [SPEAKER_03]: some clients to really react.

53 [SPEAKER_03]: I have one client that I've had her for 10 years now. [SPEAKER_03]: And every time one of my favorite peels is a lactic peel, I just, it just really makes a skin glow. [SPEAKER_03]: And that's one thing that she has was just not tolerating. [SPEAKER_03]: And so finally I, I, [SPEAKER_03]: put two and two together. [SPEAKER_03]: And I was like, okay, what happens when you drink milk? [SPEAKER_03]: And she's like, well, I can't drink milk because it just causes so many problems. [SPEAKER_03]: I'm like, okay, well, you know, after three years, we found this out. [SPEAKER_03]: That's why. [SPEAKER_01]: I say so many things you don't think would be a part of, like, so funny because I'm sitting over here and I'm like, oh, I'm lactose intolerant. [SPEAKER_01]: And I love lactose acid. [SPEAKER_01]: And now I'm kind of like, I need to read it all the way every time I use it. [SPEAKER_03]: And see if there's, if you're getting more redness or something else going on there.

36 [SPEAKER_02]: Just tell us everything. [SPEAKER_02]: When you come over to your console, like even the little things that you don't think is important, the little is food allergy, tell us. [SPEAKER_03]: And I think another point, think if you have a spot on your skin or something that has been bothering you for a while and that you're really not sure if it is our scope of practice, come in and show us. [SPEAKER_03]: And so we can, we may be able to fix it for you. [SPEAKER_01]: And we have a lot of great physicians. [SPEAKER_01]: I think we work with around the mature area. [SPEAKER_01]: And we can absolutely refer out to as well. [SPEAKER_02]: Alright, well, I think it's all time we have for today. [SPEAKER_02]: Thank you guys for hanging out with me. [SPEAKER_02]: Thank y'all for hanging out with us. [SPEAKER_02]: And we'll see y'all next week. [SPEAKER_02]: Bye!
